Rockfield began as a small hamlet before joining the Village of Germantown. This Washington County area gets its name from local fields filled with large rocks. It holds a deep history tied to the land and local industry. You can still find traces of the Silurian limestone quarries that operated here in the 1870s.
The area gained national attention during World War II. It served as the site for Camp Rockfield, which held 500 German prisoners of war. The natural landscape around Rockfield features many mature hardwood trees. You will see plenty of sturdy Sugar Maples and Shagbark Hickories in the area. These trees thrive in the mineral-rich soil left behind by ancient limestone deposits.
However, the rocky ground can sometimes limit root depth for some species. This makes trees more vulnerable to tipping during high winds or heavy ice storms. Learn more.
